Above-the-Line Charitable Deductions for Non-Itemizers
Beginning with the 2026 tax year, taxpayers who take the standard deduction may still be able to receive a tax benefit for charitable giving. A reinstated “above-the-line” charitable deduction allows donors to deduct cash gifts to qualified charities even if they do not itemize deductions:

- Up to $2,000 for married couples filing jointly
- Up to $1,000 for single filers
This provision is permanent, although the deduction amounts are not indexed for inflation. Certain gifts do not qualify for this deduction, including donations made to donor-advised funds or private non-operating foundations.
