Meet the 2025 Trish Carpenter Volunteer of the Year!

Bellevue neighbor and longtime Fairweather Circle Member Joan Ferguson was recently honored with the Trish Carpenter Volunteer of the Year Award at our Step Up to the Plate Benefit Luncheon this past April.

Established in 2014, the Trish Carpenter Volunteer of the Year Award recognizes volunteers who have provided extraordinary, often behind-the-scenes, support to Bellevue LifeSpring.

Joan, who had previously spent 17 years volunteering in public schools, was invited by a neighbor to join a Bellevue LifeSpring Circle in 2003—she’s been an active and dedicated member ever since.

For Joan, being part of Bellevue LifeSpring means more than just giving back; it means forming deep and meaningful connections. “I appreciate the range of opinions, creative ideas, life experiences, and ages within the circles,” she shared. “We all learn so much from each other, and when life challenges arise, the members are there to help smooth over the bumps in the road.”

Joan’s commitment to Bellevue LifeSpring’s mission is grounded in a heartfelt philosophy: “My community is an extension of my family,” shared Joan. “I believe in extending the care I give my family to the greater community.”

Over the years, Joan has contributed in countless ways. From her early involvement with Bellevue LifeSpring’s former thrift shop to supporting Bellevue LifeSpring’s Breaktime-Mealtime program, Joan consistently goes the extra mile.

As a Table Captain at our Step Up to the Plate Benefit Luncheon each spring, Joan helps bring new faces to the table to spread awareness and build community.

Fellow Circle Member Maggie Vergien shared, “Joan has spent countless hours filling tables to support the annual luncheon and even took on the arduous task of coordinating all the Fairweather Circle Table Captains. She has supported every Fairweather Circle fundraiser and always comes up with unique items to contribute to our auctions.”

Joan’s fellow circle members admire her dedication. “Talk about ‘behind the scenes,’ Joan is an amazing hidden gem,” one member said. “She keeps us all on track with her organizational skills and attention to detail. Joan’s work includes voucher preparation, distributing snacks for students, volunteering at other Bellevue LifeSpring circle events like One Circle’s auction, and supporting holiday giving initiatives. Joan truly is an unsung hero.”

Although she doesn’t seek recognition, Joan was honored to receive the Trish Carpenter Volunteer of the Year Award. “Even though I’m not much one for the spotlight, it’s gratifying to be honored by this award. I’m proud to join the ranks of other dedicated volunteers who’ve made lasting impacts in our community,” said Joan.

While Joan’s contributions often happen quietly, her impact speaks volumes. From fundraising to logistics, she exemplifies the heart of Bellevue LifeSpring—steadfast, generous, and deeply committed to helping Bellevue children and families thrive.
